Thousands of years ago the Chinese saw the sun rise over the islands to the east and named this country jih-pen which means the source of the sun. It came to be known as Japan by the english -speaking worlf but the Japanese call it Nippon. The sun is a very important symbol for the Japanese. It is represented by the big, red ball in the center of their national flag.
